Inlays and Onlays are restorations that are used to rebuild a tooth that has lost a significant amount of its structure due to decay or trauma. Similar to dental fillings but rather than being directly placed into your tooth and then set, they are fabricated in our dental laboratory and then cemented into place. This is known as an ‘indirect procedure’. Inlays fit into the tooth whereas onlays sit on top of the remaining tooth structure.
Inlays and onlays are quite similar. The primary difference between the two restorations is the onlay is larger and therefore replaces more missing tooth structure.
A dental inlay is designed to repair the middle section and one or two sides of a tooth. Inlays are adequate for repairing less extensive damage or decay.
Intended to repair more damage, a dental onlay is designed to extend to the tooth wall, repairing a tooth’s center in addition to its rounded edges including one to three cusps.
Dental inlays and onlays are recommended for patients who:
Whether we recommend a dental inlay (less severe damage) or onlay (more severe damage) for a patient will depend on the extent and location of the tooth’s damage. The best thing about these two restorations is that they conserve more of your natural tooth structure and this is always Dr Naz’s goal.
Whether you’re in need of a single tooth repair with an inlay or onlay or you’re hoping to completely restore more extensive damage, our Ypsilanti dentists Dr. Naz and Team can work with you to determine the right course of treatment to help you get the smile of your dreams.
We’ll examine your mouth and take dental x-rays if necessary to determine the level of tooth decay and other damage that might be present. We’ll then talk with you about all of your treatment options to customize a smile restoration plan for you.

Since inlays and onlays treat cavities and trauma-related dental conditions, insurance will cover part of the procedure.
Inlays and onlays are considered “major” dental procedures, meaning insurance can cover up to 50 percent of the cost. In this case, you will only pay a couple hundred dollars out-of-pocket.
The prices below reflect the cost of an inlay/onlay without insurance:
Porcelain veneers are usually referred to as “traditional” veneers. They are extremely durable and are virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth to the naked eye. Because they are made up of porcelain, they are stain-resistant.
It’s ultimately up to you to decide how many veneers you need. You may wish to get veneers just on the teeth which are most visible when you smile.
Veneers are permanently bonded to your tooth and need the same care as your natural teeth. With regular brushing, flossing and check-ups, your veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years.
Care for your veneers the same way you would care for your natural teeth. Brush at least twice daily with a nonabrasive toothpaste, floss at least once per day and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice per day. Avoid sugary or acidic drinks and foods after brushing and especially before bed. And don’t forget to book your routine cleaning and checkup every 6 months!
